Newport Police, Salve Regina baseball and softball teams to compete at Cardines Field

NEWPORT, R.I. - Cardines Field, home of the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, hosts another fall classic on Friday, October 2 at 8 p.m. when members of the Salve Regina University baseball and softball teams compete in a softball contest against members of the Newport Police Department. Admission is free and includes promotional giveaways throughout the game.

The softball game will be part of the Seahawks' NCAA CHOICES grant program. Through the CHOICES program, the NCAA provides funding for NCAA member institutions and conferences to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse.

Using the description of programs provided by the NCAA, Salve Regina University developed SSRC, Salve Students for Responsible Choices. SSRC was designed to create an environment at Salve Regina University that encourages all students to make responsible decisions and to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

"The cornerstone of SSRC is the peer education program," said Salve Regina director of athletics Colin Sullivan. "In order to achieve our goals of providing students with the information and tools they need to make responsible choices and decrease student drinking, peer involvement is essential."

In addition to bringing in nationally-renowned speakers on alcohol education, Salve Regina has programmed special events such as Nintendo Wii tournaments, Mr. Seahawk competition, and others with its Choices funding.

The Friday night softball game will be slow-pitch and feature all-conference performers from both Seahawk baseball and softball teams. The 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) for softball will be joined by 2008 baseball all-TCCC selections Riley Diaz (Miami, Fla.) and Craig Silva (Marlborough, Mass.). Seahawk hall of famer Gerry Willis, assistant dean of students at Salve Regina University, will throw out the first pitch.
