NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's and women's cross country coach Dave Bender has announced that junior Ryan Hurley (Barrington, R.I.) will serve as team captain for the men while junior Marissa Fiore (Lexington, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Norton (South Portland, Conn.) will serve as team captains for the women during the 2009 season.
Hurley is a very capable 8-kilometer performer who has been at or near the top of his team since his freshman year. Bender will rely upon him this season as not only one of the top team performers, but as a leader who "leads by example, runs with conviction to score, and will rally his teammates behind him to lead his team into a new era for men's cross country at Salve Regina," said Bender. He added, "Ryan has been the backbone of the men's cross country team since he was a freshman. He has demonstrated leadership skills in a mature, quiet and unassuming manner that his teammate peers respect and admire."
Fiore led the Seahawk women's cross country team and placed ninth overall with a time of 25:00 at the 2008 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships. She also led the Seahawks at the NCAA Division III New England Cross Country Qualifier, placing 164th with a time of 26:47.7. At the same event, Norton placed 192nd (27:32.5).
"Marisa Fiore and sophomore Caroline Norton have already proved their mettle as captains," says assistant women's cross country coach Matthew Hird. "Their infectious enthusiasm has galvanized the team in only a week, through both their practices and their encouragement. Their leadership will be a major factor in the team's success this year."
The Seahawks open the season with a meet at Roger Williams this Saturday, Sept. 12.
