Seahawks Picked 11th in Preseason Poll

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's soccer team was picked 11th in the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Seahawks - who received a total of 61 points - return 17 players from last season's squad which featured 19 student-athletes in their first or second year of collegiate competition.

"We are excited to kick-off the season and are going to turn some heads this season," said head coach Kerri Scroope. "The girls have been working hard and we have had a great preseason. Don't count us out. The girls are ready to show that a small school like Salve Regina can be competitive."

Salve Regina returns its top two scorers from last season in senior Jen Duval (Dudley, Mass.) and junior Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.). Duval led the Seahawks in both goals (seven) and points (17) while Andrie was second with four goals and eight points. In goal, senior Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) returns after playing every minute (1705:33) in goal last season.

Endicott was picked to win the conference title, receiving 191 points and nine first-place votes. Defending champion Roger Williams was second with 183 points and the remaining five first-place votes, followed by Univ. of New England in third place with 167 points. Gordon was fourth with 148 points, followed by Curry (144 points), Colby-Sawyer (115), Western New England (114), Nichols (103), Wentworth (78), New England College (73), Salve Regina, Eastern Nazarene (50), Regis (22), and Anna Maria (21).

Teams received 14 points for every first-place vote received, 13 points for second-place votes, 12 points for third-place votes, down to one point for a last-place vote.

The Seahawks open the 2009 season on Tuesday, Sept. 1 with a coach contest at WPI. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
