Seahawks Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's soccer team was picked fourth in the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Seahawks - who received a total of 142 points - return seven of their top eight scorers from last season's team which posted a 10-8-2 mark (7-4-2 TCCC) and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

"Preseason polls are good for the preseason," said head coach Craig O'Rourke. "Inevitably, all matches are decided on the field."

Sophomore Ian Jentgen (Colombus, Ohio) is the team's leading returning scorer with 10 points (2-6-10). Junior Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) and sophomore Max Starace (Fort Lee, N.J.) each finished with four goals and an assist (nine points) while sophomores Tony Lania (Concord, Mass.), Chris Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) and Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) each recorded eight points.

Two-time defending champion Western New England received 13 of 14 first-place votes and topped the poll with 195 points. Roger Williams received the other first-place vote and was picked second with 178 points, followed by Curry in third place with 148 points and then the Seahawks. Gordon was fifth with 137 points, followed by Nichols (119 points), New England College (106), Endicott (98), Colby-Sawyer (95), Wentworth (92), Univ. of New England (73), Anna Maria (38), Eastern Nazarene (34), and Regis (15).

Teams received 14 points for every first-place vote received, 13 points for second-place votes, 12 points for third-place votes, down to one point for a last-place vote.

The Seahawks open the 2009 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Boston for a 4 p.m. match against MIT.
