Field Hockey Picked Sixth in TCCC Preseason Coaches Poll

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University field hockey team was picked sixth in the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Seahawks - who received a total of 40 points - return seven players from last season's squad which went 7-13 (3-5 TCCC) and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

"After an exciting playoff run last year to the semifinals, our team knows what it takes to win and is focused on advancing even farther this season," said fourth-year head coach Jen Eldridge. "We have added depth to our roster, and these players will contribute in many different ways. I believe the team's focus, energy and hard work so far this preseason is that of a championship team. I am looking forward to seeing all of the pieces continue to come together as the season progresses."

The loss of their top four scorers from a season ago means the Seahawks will have a dramatically different look up-front. In the midfield, juniors Ali Campagna (West Hartford, Conn.) and Lindsay Burt (Hopedale, Mass.) return after starting 20 and 18 games a season ago, respectively. Campagna recorded five points (2-1-5) while Burt tallied four assists. Senior co-captain and 2008 TCCC Second Team selection Andrea Michel (Yarmouth, Maine) dished out three assists in 2008 and anchors the defense, while senior co-captain Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.) and her .822 save percentage from last season return in the cage.

Endicott topped the poll with 77 points and six first-place votes, followed by defending champion New England College with 71 points and the remaining three first-place votes. Gordon and Nichols tied for third place (55 points each), followed by Univ. of New England (47 points), Salve Regina, Western New England (33 points), Anna Maria (14 points), and Regis (13 points).

Teams received nine points for every first-place vote received, eight points for second-place votes, seven points for third-place votes, down to one point for a last-place vote.

The Seahawks open the 2009 season with a contest at Wheaton (Mass.) on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
