NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's soccer coach Kerri Scroope announced today that Margaret Gonsalves will join her staff as an assistant coach for the 2009 season. Gonsalves replaces Alison Skoglund, who accepted a similar position at Merrimack College earlier this year.
A 2009 graduate of Umass Lowell, Gonsalves began her playing career at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) and appeared in 19 games for the Blue Devils. Gonsalves played in seven games as a freshman in 2004 and, after missing all of 2005, returned to play in 12 games in 2006 (six starts). Following the season, she transferred to UML, where she appeared in 31 games for the River Hawks over her final two seasons. Gonsalves tallied eight points (2-4-8) in her first season at UML and recorded two goals and two assists (six points) as a senior in 2008. Following her senior campaign, she was selected to participate in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior All-Star Bowl.
"Margaret brings Division I and II experience and a great deal of game knowledge to our program," said Scroope, who begins her third season as women's soccer coach in 2009. "I am very excited to have her on board as we strive to become one of the top teams in the conference. She will be working with the defense and helping with the development of our new system of play."
Gonsalves was a four-year letterwinner on the Dartmouth H.S. Women's soccer team and twice led them in goals (2003-04). She has also played soccer for the MAPLE Soccer Club (1999-2002), the Cape Cod Lady Crusaders of the Super-Y League (2003-04), and the Massachusetts Stingers of Women's Premier Soccer (2006).
As an undergraduate, Gonsalves was employed by SoHo Experimentals (2008-09), where she helped the company market their products. She has also worked as a member of the administrative support team for the United States Navy, Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC) (2007-08).
Gonsalves holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Marketing from Umass Lowell. She resides in Dartmouth, Mass.
