NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University football team placed 15 student-athletes on the 2008-09 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic Team, which was released today.
Seahawk seniors Jon Alvarez (Oneonta, N.Y.), Brandon Baldyga (Wells, Maine), and Tim Quagliarello (North Haven, Conn.) joined juniors Patrick Horrigan (Peabody, Mass.), Brian Kirkland (Stoneham, Mass.), and Matt Shubert (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomores John Fall (Brooklyn, N.Y.), David Guerriero (Quincy, Mass.), Rob LaRiviere-Tougas (Easthampton, Mass.), John Norman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Eric Pacy (Rowley, Mass.), Nick Piscitelli (North Haven, Conn.), Mitchell Roshong (Verona, N.J.), and Mike Smilgis (Londonderry, N.H.) on the squad. Alvarez, Baldyga, Horrigan, Kirkland, Quagliarello, and Shubert were also named to the team last season.
A total of 224 student-athletes representing the conference's 16 institutions were honored. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must have completed three semesters at the same institution and maintained a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. Salve Regina's 15 student-athletes was the seventh-highest total in the NEFC, behind only MIT (31), Mass.-Dartmouth (22), Plymouth State (20), Westfield State (19), Curry (16), and Endicott (18).
This past fall, Alvarez played in nine games, recording 39 tackles (20 solo) and two sacks. Baldyga appeared in six games on the offensive line and Quagliarello played in nine games, tallying 50 tackles (29 solo) and two sacks. Horrigan appeared in seven games and posted two solo tackles, Kirkland played in nine games and registered two assisted tackles, and Shubert hauled in 15 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown.
As for the sophomores, LaRiviere-Tougas led the team and finished in the top 10 in the NEFC with 976 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Fall tallied 17 tackles (nine solo) in nine games played while Guerriero notched 20 tackles (17 solo) in seven games. Norman appeared in seven games, making six tackles (four solo), while Pacy had 30 tackles, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions. Piscitelli caught 18 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown while Roshong appeared in seven games and Smilgis played in three.
The Seahawks finished the 2009 season 4-5 overall (3-4 NEFC). They open the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 at WPI.
