NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University softball junior Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) earned a place on the 2009 New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association Division III All-Star Team.
Jakiela - a First Team All-The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) selection as well as the conference's Pitcher of the Year - finished 25-18 with a 2.07 earned run average (ERA) and a single-season school-record 400 strikeouts. As a result, the Seahawks set a school-record for wins in a season (25) and earned their first-ever playoff berth; they were one of eight schools selected to participate in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament as the No. 7 seed.
In conference play this season, Jakiela led the conference in every major pitching category, including wins (16), ERA (1.26), strikeouts (229), innings pitched (156.0), complete games (21), and opponent batting average (.179). In the most recent NCAA Rankings (May 11), she ranked sixth nationally in wins and ninth in strikeouts per seven innings.
Jakiela tossed a pair of perfect games against Newbury on March 9, and later tossed a no-hitter against conference foe Wentworth on Senior Day on April 25. Offensively, she tied for the team lead in RBI (21) and finished second in hits (32).
Earlier this month she earned a spot on the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region Third Team.
"Sarah is an amazing athlete and has put up incredible numbers all season," said Salve Regina head coach Kerri Scroope. "She continues to prove she is one of the best in the area and I can't wait to see what she brings to the diamond next year."
