Standardized Testing Policy

The submission of standardized test scores is optional at Salve Regina unless you are considering a major in education or nursing. Students who decide not to submit scores will not be at any disadvantage during the admission process. Listed below are frequently asked questions that we hope you will find useful as you learn about our test-optional policy. Our admissions staff is also available to answer any questions you may have; please do not hesitate to call our office at (401) 341-2908 or (888) GO-SALVE.

Standardized Testing Policy

Can I be considered for a merit scholarship if I do not submit test scores?
Yes. All applicants are eligible for merit scholarship consideration whether or not they submit SAT or ACT scores.
What if I have already submitted test scores and do not want them to be considered?
If you have already submitted test scores or they appear on the high school transcript and you prefer not to have the scores considered, the scores will not be used as part of the application review process if you have indicated that preference on the Common Application supplement.
How will this affect transfer students?
Transfer students applying for nursing or education must submit official test scores if they have earned fewer than 30 credits.
Why did Salve Regina make the submission of standardized testing optional?
The decision to become test optional is the result of a long process of research and discussion. Our research showed that the best predictor of academic success at Salve Regina is strong performance in a rigorous college preparatory program. The goal is to stay true to the inclusive spirit of our mission and focus on what really matters, which is a student’s ability to succeed and thrive in our community.
How do I indicate that I do not want my test scores to be considered for admission?
When completing your Common Application, you must complete the required supplement which includes a question about whether you wish us to consider your test scores. If you do not complete this question, your scores will be used. If you do not complete the question and you do not submit scores, your application will be considered incomplete until the scores have been received or until you notify us in writing of your preference. If you indicate that you do not wish us to consider your test scores, but you have applied to either the nursing or education programs, we will (a) use any scores that have been submitted, or (b) consider your application incomplete until the scores have been received.
What if I change my mind after I have submitted my application?
If you have already submitted your application, you must notify us in writing of any changes by e-mailing sruadmis@salve.edu or faxing (401) 848-2823.
Will a student be at a disadvantage if he or she decides not to submit standardized test scores?
No. There is no negative impact on a student’s application or eligibility for academic scholarships should they decide not to submit test scores.
Are there any exceptions to this policy?
Yes. Students interested in applying to the nursing and education programs are still required to submit SAT or ACT scores, as will homeschooled students. International students with a native language other than English are still required to submit their TOEFL or IELTS scores as part of their admissions application. International students who have taken the SAT or ACT may submit those scores in lieu of the TOEFL or IELTS.
How does this change the way that Salve Regina evaluates my application?
Our staff will continue to review applications as thoroughly as we have done in the past. The most important part of our application review process has always been and will continue to be a student’s day-to-day performance in a strong curriculum. Our best applicants have always been those who have challenged themselves beyond the minimum requirements. We also consider the student’s personal statement, two letters of recommendations from teachers and counselors, and the student’s interests and extracurricular activities.
Why would a student choose to submit standardized test scores if they are not required?
If a student feels that their test scores provide further evidence of their ability to succeed at Salve Regina, he or she may wish to submit them. However, if a student does not feel their scores are indicative of their academic ability, then they may not wish to submit them. You will not be penalized if you decide not to submit scores.
