Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at Salve Regina raises fundamental questions about human life, human experience and what it means to be human – and then asks that you make these questions your own.

Philosophers seek to integrate knowledge from all other enquiries and bodies of knowledge in order to work toward a world view that matters. One aim of the Catholic philosophical tradition has been to provide a view of the human condition which integrates the knowledge from the various enquiries with our theological understanding of ourselves.

Led by an accomplished faculty, including experts in the classics and Muslim philosophy, our small classes engage students in interactive discussions and debates and foster close bonds between peers and professors.

Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in our lively Philosophy Club, in which we examine and discuss relevant philosophical texts and explore philosophical sites in such cities as New York and Boston.

With a challenging curriculum rooted in a strong liberal arts tradition, our program develops the analytic and creative thinking, writing and communications skills that are needed for success in a variety of fields. Our majors are well prepared for graduate studies as well as careers in law, business and government.
