Major in Theatre Arts (B.A.)

Students majoring in theatre arts take a minimum of 13 courses (38 credits). Majors are expected to maintain a GPA of 2.7 in all theatre courses and participate in four productions, two as crew members and two as performers.

Required courses:
  • New York Theatre
  • Introduction to Theatre Arts
  • Introduction to Acting
  • Theatre History I and II
  • Studies in Shakespeare
  • Stagecraft
  • Dramatic Theory and Criticism
  • Theatre Management
  • Thesis Preparation
  • Senior Thesis

Students also choose two courses from the following list of electives:

  • Script Analysis
  • Stage Combat
  • Theatre for Children and Youth
  • Theatre Production

Students who are committed to a professional career in the field or who plan to attend graduate school have the option to concentrate in acting or technical theatre. Each concentration requires a minimum of five additional courses (11 credits).

Concentration in Acting

Students who choose to concentrate in acting take the following courses:

  • Voice and Diction
  • Scene Study: Classical
  • Scene Study: Contemporary
  • Acting in Film and Television
  • The Business of Acting

Concentration in Technical Theatre

Students who choose to concentrate in technical theatre take the following courses:

  • Stage Management
  • Makeup for Stage and Film
  • Scenic Design
  • History and Use of Costume
  • Directing

Minor in Theatre Arts

Students completing a minor in theatre arts take a minimum of eight courses (18 credits). Minors are expected to maintain a GPA of 2.7 in all theatre courses and participate in two productions, one as a crew member and one as a performer.

Required courses:
  • Introduction to Theatre Arts
  • Introduction to Acting
  • Theatre History II
  • Stagecraft
  • Theatre Management

Students also choose three courses from the following list of electives:

  • New York Theatre
  • Stage Management
  • Scenic Design
  • Acting in Film and Television
  • The Business of Acting
