Students majoring in music take a minimum of 41 credits
and follow a program of study approved by the department chair. In order to
major in music, students must first be interviewed and accepted by a designated
member of the faculty.
Required courses:
- Theory I, II and III
- Analysis
- Major Recital
- One advanced theory course
- One music history course
Students take 12 credits of individual music lessons in
their principal instrument or in voice, and two credits of individual music
lessons in a secondary area. Voice majors also take Language Orientation.
Music majors perform in a department ensemble each
semester and attend department meetings and seminars. All majors are required
to pass comprehensive examinations in music history and theory and in piano
proficiency prior to graduation.
Minor in Music
Students completing a minor in music take a minimum of 18
credits and follow a program of study approved by the department chair.
Required courses:
- Theory I and II
- One music history course
Remaining coursework is divided among individual music lessons and
performing ensembles.
