What Can I Do With This Degree?

A degree in history develops students' analytical abilities and strengthens their research and writing skills. Our curriculum prepares students for graduate programs and law school and a variety of career paths.

In the Workforce

Teaching

Many history graduates become teachers at the high school or middle school level. Some students pursue double majors in secondary education to prepare for high school teaching. In addition, some of our American and European history majors are teaching in public and private schools.

Museums, Archives and Public History

An increasing number of history majors are interested in working in museums, historical societies and/or libraries after they graduate. One alumna has served as the executive director of the New England Museum Association, another is employed by the Preservation Society of Newport County and others are currently completing master's programs.

Public Service and Government

Some of our alumni serve in federal and state agencies while others have worked for political organizations.
