Global Studies

The global studies program at Salve Regina is an interdisciplinary major that offers capable and motivated students a unique academic program tailored to their creative and career interests.

We recognize that the issues and problems confronting our society and world are not defined by disciplinary boundaries or by national borders, and that understanding comes through the integration of knowledge. To gain this understanding, students in the global studies program draw on the expertise of faculty in a number of carefully selected disciplinary areas.

Our program begins with an introduction to the methodology of interdisciplinary study and concludes with a directed research project or thesis. Faculty help students develop a coherent and balanced major that takes advantage of the breadth of knowledge across traditional disciplines while still focusing on a specific topic, whether historical, regional, thematic or problem-focused.

Introduction to Global Studies
Global Studies Program

This course provides students with an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of global studies. An interactive classroom environment invites students to acquire the skills needed to understand the origins and consequences of global interconnectedness. Readings, class discussions and research assignments present students with opportunities for tracing globally-traded commodities such as coffee, chocolate, rubber, oil, music and tablet computers from initial production to end consumption, and for identifying the effects of these processes on local communities. The course emphasizes both learning how to use a variety of analytical methods for addressing complex contemporary problems and gaining an awareness of differing perspectives and cultural traditions.
