Major in Special Education (B.S.)

Students who select a double major in elementary and special education take a minimum of eight courses in special education (34 credits).

Required courses:

  • Introduction to the Characteristics of Students with Exceptionalities
  • Language Development and Communication Problems of Children
  • Curriculum, Methodology and Assessment for Students with Mild/Moderate Needs in the Early Grades
  • Curriculum, Methodology and Assessment for Students with Mild/Moderate Needs in the Middle Grades
  • Assessment Procedures for Children with Disabilities
  • Principles and Procedures for Behavior and Classroom Management
  • Collaboration: Home, School and Community
  • Student Teaching in Special Education and Student Teaching Seminar

Minor in Special Education

Students completing a minor in special education take a minimum of six courses (18 credits).

Required courses:

  • Introduction to the Characteristics of Students with Exceptionalities
  • Language Development and Communication Problems of Children

Education majors who minor in special education are also required to complete Principles and Procedures for Behavior and Classroom Management, while special education minors with a major outside of education are required to complete Sign Language I.

All minors choose three additional electives in special education in consultation with the program coordinator.
