Transfer and Prior Learning Credits

Transfer Credit

Transfer credit is awarded to matriculated students on the basis of official transcripts validating studies completed successfully at regionally accredited postsecondary institutions, when the coursework is comparable to that of Salve Regina and does not duplicate other courses for which credit has been granted.

Qualifying grades are C or above (not C- or Pass), and qualifying credits earned prior to matriculation are received in transfer with no effect on the GPA. Courses that have been applied toward a prior degree are not considered for transfer. Credit earned at institutions outside the U.S. is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, taking into account all factors deemed necessary, including appropriate national recognition of institutional quality.

Prior Learning Credit

Salve Regina awards academic credit for the learning associated with life and military experience. Students applying for life experience or military experience credits must first be matriculated into a bachelor's program at the University.

To apply, students submit a portfolio which includes a description of the experience, an explanation of the ways in which the acquired knowledge and skills would fit into specific course requirements in the student's program, and documentation or evidence of the learning experience (transcripts, certificates, samples of work completed, published articles, letters from employers and other evidence). When completed, the portfolio is evaluated by the appropriate department chair and dean.

Students should contact the Office of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education to discuss the application prior to developing the portfolio. Fees are charged based on the number of credits granted: $150 for 1-3 credits, $300 for 4-6 credits and $450 for 7-9 credits. An application form with specific instructions is available on the Office of the Registrar's website.
